Collecting as a hobby can be fun and rewarding. Collections can cost millions to put together or they can cost nothing at all, so this is one hobby anyone can enjoy. Many kids naturally start collections without ever thinking about them being a hobby because they are simply drawn to picking up the same type of thing over and over again.
In my house, there are collections of rocks, sea shells, pressed flowers and other found objects tucked into little wooden treasure boxes. There are also collections of toys, such as Zhu Zhu Pets and Littlest Pet Shop figures. I personally have a collection of vintage American pottery pieces because I love the bright colors and functionality of a nice, rectangular little planter. If none of those collections strike your fancy, here are some other collection ideas.
Model Horses Make Great Collectibles for Horse Lovers of All Ages
As a child, I collected model horses as a hobby. I didn't just amass a collection of plastic ponies, though. This hobby taught me about the different horse breeds, tack and even how to evaluate a pedigree before breeding horses.
While I didn't grow up to become a horse breeder, I did enjoy every moment of showing my model horses, altering the horses so they had a unique look and learning about concepts like rare and common items. Just About Horses magazine is an excellent resource for children who want to learn more about collecting and showing Breyer horses and other model horses.
Business Cards Can Make Surprisingly Attractive Collections
Many people hear someone talk about collecting business cards and picture a stack of boring white cards with names and phone numbers on them. However, business cards come in a rainbow of colors and card stock types. Right now, there is a beautifully embossed color card that is printed on a piece of cream tag board, a lime green business card with rounded corners and a card with a lovely pet graphic on my desk.
While collecting these cards is a terrific hobby for children, there are adults who enjoy swapping calling cards or mommy cards with each other, too. Some magazines regular feature unique business cards in their pages, as well. Country Living Magazine has some great suggestions for people who are looking to make a unique business card to swap.
Food Boxes and Tins Can be Collectibles
Food is a big part of many people's lives, so it is no surprise that some collections center around food, too. One fun and colorful collection belonged to mac and cheese lover Ian Golder, who had a massive number of macaroni and cheese boxes from different brands and appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss his collection.
When you take a close look at the world around you, you, too, may just find a fascinating object just waiting to become the first of a large collection. If an object exists, people somewhere have a collection of it and are getting immense enjoyment from their hobby. Paperclips, pens, marbles and vintage postcards are just a few popular collectibles that have captured the attention of collectors worldwide.
